The CPV Formula Explained

CPV = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Views

CPV is the standard metric for video campaigns bought on a per-view basis. It answers: "How much does it cost to get one person to watch my video?"

What Counts as a View? YouTube Definition (August 2026)

For YouTube TrueView in-stream ads (skippable), Google Ads counts a billable view when:

  • The viewer watches 30 seconds of the ad (or the full duration if the ad is shorter than 30 seconds), or
  • The viewer interacts with the ad (clicks a CTA overlay, companion banner, or card).

For bumper ads (6 seconds, non-skippable), Google charges on a CPM basis, not CPV — views equal impressions.

For non-skippable in-stream ads (15 seconds), billing is typically CPM. The CPV metric is most relevant to TrueView (skippable) campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate cost per view?
CPV = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Views. If you spent $1,000 and received 50,000 views, your CPV is $0.02. This calculator solves in any direction: enter spend and views to get CPV, or enter CPV and spend to forecast views, or enter views and CPV to find required budget.
What counts as a view on YouTube and Google Video ads?
As of August 2026, Google Ads counts a view for TrueView in-stream ads when a viewer watches 30 seconds of the video (or the full duration if shorter than 30 seconds), or interacts with your ad (clicking a CTA, for example). For bumper ads (6 seconds or less), views are counted as impressions, not watch-through views. Skippable and non-skippable in-stream ads have different billing thresholds — always verify the current definition in the Google Ads Help Center, as thresholds have changed historically. CPV vs CPM for video campaigns — which should I use?
CPM (cost per thousand impressions) charges when the ad appears on screen, whether or not anyone watches it. CPV charges only when a viewer watches a defined portion of the video. CPV is better for brand storytelling campaigns where engagement depth matters — you only pay for people who actually watched. CPM is better for reach maximization across high-frequency placements. YouTube TrueView defaults to CPV bidding; YouTube non-skippable and bumper ads are typically bought on CPM.
